Let’s be honest, Las Vegas was not designed for children. The visual stimuli, erratic behaviors, alcohol and smoke in casinos is not something that a kids should be exposed to,.
Well guess what, I’ve taken my children not once but twice, and it wasn’t that bad, all you have to do is to steer them away from situations you don’t want to explain just yet.
The first time, we took our children to Nevada was to MT Charleston ski resort, 1 hr from the strip, we all had a good time, I mean it’s not colorado but when you have only 4 days to enjoy a mini break everything counts, non-stop flights, kids activities and some adult entertainment too.
The 2nd time, it was also a short trip for spring break. After reviewing all our options, we found that Las Vegas was our best bet, the only thing we needed to do was to tweak our usual couple’s getaway itinerary and replace it with fun stuff for kids, wait what? I know, but a parent gotta do what a parent gotta do.
I love my children, but I also want to have fun and not feeling like I’m the nanny while we are on a vacay so how can I have the best of both worlds? the answer was staying in Henderson, City of Henderson to be exact, is the second largest city in Nevada after Las Vegas, only 16 miles southeast from Sin City! it has a few casinos but is nothing compare to Vegas, here, it feels more like a big peaceful community.
In case you are wondering why Las Vergas area for a family getaway, here are my reasons:
- Allegiant air, although is not the chicest airline it has great itinerary options and competitive prices.
- 2½ hr flight from our city, and I’m sure your city is in their rout map too.
- Our NEW destination to explore is only 20 minutes driving from Las Vegas!
Selecting the hotel is an easy thing to do, there are only two that are worth the trip. The Hilton or The Westin, this time I decided to stay at The Westin Lake Las Vegas.
From the path that leads to the hotel I knew I made the right decision, the well groomed golf course leads you to this Moroccan style jewel right in the middle of the desert, it resembles to an oasis, definitely something worth seeing.
The Amenities
Rooms are clean and spacious, food is good too, the view is pleasant but the best of all are definitely the outdoor activities. Swimming pools here are a lot of fun, one of them has a water slide. There’s also a mini beach where little kids build their sand castles and young adults go paddling in the lake. Overall the hotel and services are good, but keep in mind that if you don’t want to feel completely disconnected make sure you select the high speed Internet, otherwise the regular is practically null.
The first day, I spent all day by the pools with the kids while the hubby was out golfing. By 4pm we went back to the room, showered, and got ready to enjoy our dinner at the Massa, very nice atmosphere, service and cuisine. After this, we moved to the patio were you see others parents enjoying a glass of Merlot by the fireplace while the kids play until it was time to call it a day.
The next day we rushed to the water slide, enjoyed our lunch by the pool and here we decided to spend the afternoon exploring the neighborhood.
We went to the MonteLago Village Resort, it’s a Tuscany themed shopping area, here you find the gourmet market, gelato shop and pizzeria, it’s a small but charming place to spend a few hours sitting on a bench enjoying your cone while watching people passing or having a glass of proseco and relax by the Lake.
The last day we decided to visit Las Vegas, we drove them around the strip, took them to the Linq promenade to catch the sunset from the high roller, then we headed to the fashion show mall for a little retail therapy.

@Sugar Factory
We ended our adventure at the sugar factory, they needed to see with their own eyes these Milkshakes!
Now it’s time to go back to Henderson, I can’t forget their little faces looking at all the lights on the strip, my daughter said she wanted to come back every spring brake, haha As if!.
This was our little scape to LAS, we all were happy with our last minute destination, Henderson will definitely see us again.😉
Thank you for reading ! and regardless how or where you spend your summer days I hope you not only enjoy your family but also some YOU-Time as well.
